A vitamin is an organic substance essential for life, which regulates metabolism and assists the processes that the energy release from digested food. Vitamin E, discovered in the mid-twentieth century, helps to strengthen our immune system and protects us from a variety of problems as well as several serious illnesses.

When you think of the B vitamins most people think of vitamin B6 or B12 or b complex which makes up the whole group. Vitamin B12 is the most widely known of the vitamin B group however B6 and b complex are starting to become well known due to the huge influx of people with vitamin B deficiencies. On average 1 out of 31 adults above the age of 51 have low vitamin B12. Even though vitamin B12 deficiencies are largely seen in the elderly populations, a study in 2002 found that 40% of healthy men and women had low levels of B vitamins. There are likely a large number of people who go undetected with vitamin B deficiencies.

The B vitamins are a group of water-soluble vitamins that play a huge role in the body. The group of vitamin B’s are essential nutrients to the body because they are involved in so much of the bodies metabolism. The B vitamins are responsible for cellular differentiation, transmission of nerve electricity, health of nerve cells, heart pulse rate, muscular contraction, digestion, brain function, thought processes, energy production, metabolism, maintenance of skin and muscle tone, enhancing the immune and nervous system functions, promoting cell growth and division, and DNA synthesis. Originally the B vitamins were thought to be one vitamin but were later discovered to be a complex set of vitamins that coexist.

Although each individual vitamin has its own set of functions they work in conjunction to maintain the health of the human body. Each vitamin although specifically categorized within the B group also has their own chemical name ie. B12- cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin, B2- riboflavin, B9- folic acid. B vitamins are found in whole unprocessed foods such as meat, poultry, milk, eggs, and fish. Additionally B vitamins can be found in whole grains, potatoes, bananas, lentils, chili peppers, tempeh, beans, nutritional yeast and molasses. However, B12 is the only one of the B group that cannot be found in plant products. Lower levels of vitamin B can be found in processed sugars and flour, as well as beers, and energy drinks, however the effects from these products can cancel out the benefit of the B vitamins or even cause a net deficit of vitamin B within the body.

          ]]>

Vegetarians make up a portion of people with B12 deficiency due to the lack of eating meat. Because of the huge number of people who are vitamin B deficient it is important to understand the reasons behind vitamin B deficiencies. Most people who have low levels or are deficient in vitamin B consume the proper amounts of the vitamin B’s. However, their stomachs have trouble absorbing the vitamin because of reduced levels of stomach acidity or intestinal disorders. In addition a disease called pernicious anemia, destroys the stomach cells that absorbs vitamin B12. Heartburn medicines and ulcer medicines also have this affect on the stomach as well. Surgical procedures on the stomach or intestines can also lead to trouble absorbing vitamin B12. Still there are other reasons for low levels or B deficiencies.

Stress plays a huge role on body functioning and is known for causing physical reactions within the body. Stress actually causes vitamin B levels to deplete within the body and the longer stress is present the longer the body will be deficient of vitamin B. A poor diet that is filled with processed foods and refined sugar leads to lower levels of vitamin B. Ultimately a poor diet leads to malnutrition which can lead to more severe health problems. Also all the food we eat is cooked, baked, heated or fried which leads to the elimination of nutrients. Excessive heating can destroy essential nutrients in the foods that we eat. By eating more raw foods our body can get adequate amounts of all vitamins, minerals and nutrients. In addition drugs, both recreational and prescription medications deplete the levels of vitamin B. Toxic poisons and chemicals not only in the environment but through personal products can lead to lower levels of vitamin B.

It has been discovered that initially there are no detectable signs that signify a lowered level or deficiency in vitamin B. Lowered levels of vitamin B can cause severe, debilitating problems within the body overtime. Unfortunately the first signs of deficiency are ignored, misinterpreted or diagnosed as something else. This includes signs of altered or diminished capacity such as fatigue, weakness, low energy and poor health. Overtime as the body goes without vitamin B more and more symptoms arise such as mental problems, heart palpitations, heart arrhythmias, fibrillation, indigestion, chronic fatigue, chronic exhaustion, paranoia, nervousness, feeling of uneasiness, easy agitation, frustration, insomnia, restlessness, tingling in hands, fingers and toes, rashes, crying spells, soreness all over, weight loss, cheilosis, sore throat, aggression, dermatitis, mental confusion, diarrhea, acne, paresthesia, anemia, depression, hypertension, impaired growth, peripheral neuropathy, memory loss, and many more. In addition to physical symptomology, diseases and illnesses are soon to appear including beriberi, scurvy, Wernicke’s encephalopathy, ariboflavinosis, pellagra, microcytic anemia, Multiple carboxylase deficiency, and Pernicious anemia. Furthermore with the lack of vitamin B the adrenal system goes into overdrive to produce energy within the body. If the adrenal system continues to work overtime it can become worn out or impaired causing the body even more severe problems.

If you have been diagnosed with lowered levels of vitamin B or a vitamin B deficiency then taking a vitamin B supplement is pertinent to avoiding problems within the body. Although, eating foods that are rich in vitamin B are better than taking a supplement in some cases supplementation is necessary. To raise your vitamin B levels it is necessary to take in at least 1000 mcg a day, which is near impossible to do with regular food. Dietary supplementation is necessary and there are several B vitamin supplements on the market including pills, tablets, capsules, and injections. If a medical doctor diagnoses you with a vitamin B deficiency, they can prescribe B12 or vitamin B complex in pharmaceutical grade. This is more potent than nutritional supplements because it is regulated by the FDA and has to go through a rigorous approval process. Vitamin B injections are more easily absorbed into the bloodstream. They are given once a week and are usually taken for the rest of your life. However vitamin B pills are just as effective as vitamin B shots. Ask your doctor for recommendations on a brand of nutritional supplementation for vitamin B.

In naturopathic medicine, the belief is that acne is caused by imbalances within the body. These imbalances can be mental, physical or spiritual. Physical imbalances include toxicity of the blood and lymph nodes and deficiencies of essential vitamins and minerals. Due to the inadequate American diet, the limited amount of exercise and sleep, and the extensive amount of stress that we deal with on a daily basis, vitamin and mineral deficiencies have become more and more prevalent in today’s society. Therefore the best acne treatment would be supplementation of adequate vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals are essential for the health of skin, hormone balance, and a strong immune system. The vitamins and minerals that impact acne are vitamins A, B, C, E and zinc, and chromium. They not only influence the occurrence, and reoccurrence of acne but also the amount of acne that can appear on the skin. By adding these vitamins and minerals into your diet, you can eliminate acne from your skin and can have a healthy and radiant complexion.

Vitamin A is one of the essential fat-soluble vitamins that the body needs. Vitamin A has several functions in the body such as aiding hormone production, maintaining mucous membranes of the respiratory, urinary and digestive tracts, stimulates cell growth of skin, teeth and bones and improves immune system function. Vitamin A has been known to treat acne by reducing sebum and keratin production. It also treats other skin disorders, reduces age spots, and eliminates fine lines. This vitamin can be applied topically to the skin or take as a supplement. Food sources that include vitamin A are apricots, asparagus, beet greens, carrots, pumpkins, watermelon, cantaloupe, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, mangoes, tomatoes, citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables. In addition the herbs alfalfa, borage, burdock root, cayenne, and chickweed also contain vitamin A. A dose of 10,000 IU daily can help maintain healthy skin although acne treatments recommend very large doses such as 100,000- 300,000 IU. However, taking large doses of vitamin A can cause headaches, fatigue and muscle pain therefore speak to your doctor before taking a larger dosage of vitamin A.

          ]]>

The groups of B vitamins are important for healthy skin tone. However, the B vitamins have several functions throughout the body and most often than not you can be deficient in one and not the others or in all of them. The B vitamins are vital to the function of our metabolism, maintaining healthy skin and muscle, enhance immune and nervous system function, and promote cell growth and division. Therefore vitamin B deficiencies can lead to fatigue, depression, anxiety, weakness, disease and stress. Inflammation of the skin is one of the signs of a vitamin B6 deficiency. Because the B vitamins are water-soluble it is important to regularly replenish them throughout the body. To treat acne and skin conditions it is recommended to take vitamin B3 100 mg, three times a day, vitamin B6 50 mg three times a day, and vitamin B5 50 mg three times a day. However, it is more effective to take a vitamin B complex rather than take vitamin B’s individual to reduce the risk of a deficiency in any of the B vitamins. Vitamin B can also be found in turkey, tuna, liver, meat products, whole grains, potatoes, bananas, lentils, chili peppers, tempeh, beans, nutritional yeast, brewer’s yeast and molasses.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is an anti-oxidant. It has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and helps to heal skin problems. Not only does vitamin C repair damaged skin cells but also it helps new tissue growth. It also protects against infection and boosts the immune system. It acts as antihistamine and an antibacterial as well. Vitamin C is essential to healing acne and skin tissue as well as preventing it from reoccurring. Vitamin C is highly prevalent in citrus fruits as well as many vegetables. The recommended daily amount of vitamin C is 3000-5000 mg a day.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that is an antioxidant as well. Vitamin E is essential for healthy, clear skin. It protects cell membranes from the damage by inhibiting the oxidation of fat. Vitamin E also speeds of the healing process of acne and acne scarring. Vitamin E is also essential for the absorption of vitamin A. The recommended daily amount of Vitamin E is 400 IU. Dietary sources of vitamin E include seeds, nuts, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, pumpkin, sweet potato, blue crab, rockfish, mangoes, asparagus, broccoli, and papayas.

Zinc is one mineral that is effective in treating acne. Acne is actually one of the signs of a zinc deficiency. Zinc has many functions throughout the body, which can help to support healthy skin and control acne and acne breakouts. Zinc maintains hormone balance through out the body, which can be one of the causes of acne. As well as normalizing oil production in the skin. Zinc acts as an antibacterial, which kills off acne causing bacteria. Zinc strengthens the immune system, speeds up the healing process by aiding in tissue regeneration, prevents scarring, protects against UV radiation, and decreases the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Zinc can be found in egg yolks, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, soybeans, legumes, whole grains, fish, soy lecithin and in the herbs such as eyebright, milk thistle, chamomile, dandelion, cayenne, mullein, burdock root, alfalfa and nettle. The recommended amount of zinc is 30 – 50 mg a day.

Chromium is a mineral that is essential for maintaining blood sugar levels in the body. Due to the high amounts of sugar consumed in today’s diet more and more chromium is needed to reduce blood sugar. A high blood sugar can lead to disease, infection and inflammation in the body, not to mention obesity. Chromium not only reduces blood sugar levels but it reduces infections in the body and the skin. Because it is hard to get enough chromium through our diet it is necessary to take a supplementation called chromium picolinate. It is recommended to take 150 mg a day of chromium.

Dietary sources of chromium include corn on the cob, onions, romaine lettuce, oysters, liver, whole grains, bran cereals, potatoes, sweet potato, apples, organic eggs, tomato, broccoli, brewer’s yeast and molasses. However, chromium is found in only minimal amounts and is usually heated away through the cooking process.

Stress has several long-term affects on the body. The nutrients provided by the food we eat and produced within our bodies are used up more rapidly in times of stress. Therefore our bodies require additional supplementation otherwise the bodies resources will be depleted and normal function will suffer or cease. The adrenal glands are chiefly responsible for the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, GH, epinephrine and norepinephrine. During times of stress, these hormones are released into the system and can stay at a raised level for up to 72 hours after the stress has been relieved. Increased levels of stress hormones have several reactions in the body including mobilizing energy from storage in muscles, increasing heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate and shutting down metabolic processes such as digestion, reproduction, growth and immunity. By supporting the adrenal glands with proper nutrients during stressful times, the body can adapt and management stress until it can be resolved.

Nutrients within the body include carbohydrates, fats, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, water, and oxygen. These chemical substances are required for humans or any organism for that matter to live, and grow. Through our metabolism we use these materials for normal body functioning. Without these substances in adequate amounts the body cannot function normally. Stress causes the body to use up the nutrients faster than normal body function, which normally renders the body deficient. Deficiency caused by stress can lead to depleted energy storage, high blood pressure, hypertension, ulcers, decreased growth, decreased testosterone, and increased likelihood of disease.

Thus, a simple blood test can show if you have a vitamin deficiency. Your daily stress can be causing this deficiency, which can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, nervousness, withdrawal, irritability, and decreased energy. Depending upon how depleted your body system is will determine if therapeutic dosages of vitamins are needed to restore your levels. However, taking a multivitamin regularly can help you avoid the symptoms of stress. Here are the vitamins that can help in the reduction of stress levels in the body.

Vitamin A- Vitamin A is a rich antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals. It is essential for vision, skin, mucous membranes and immunity. In times of stress vitamin A cleans the body of toxins that can deplete energy levels. Low energy levels are a sign of stress influence. Vitamin A can be found in foods such as liver, carrot, broccoli, sweet potato, butter, kale, spinach, pumpkin, collard greens, Cheddar cheese, cantaloupe melon, egg, apricot, papaya, mango, pea, broccoli, and milk.

Vitamin B Complex- The group of B vitamins is made up of several different B vitamins that work conjunctively in hundreds of different cellular reactions within the body. Although, each B vitamin has its set responsibilities they all are incorporated into increasing energy, decreasing fatigue, increased alertness, and uplifting mood. Vitamin B makes adrenal gland hormones and manufactures brain chemicals.

Thiamine/B1- Improves mood, is vital to nerve function, helps heart function, and assists in the Central Nervous System. It improves attitudes, increases energy production by converting blood sugar into energy, promotes a healthy mucous membrane, promotes muscular and cardio function, nerve health, and mental function through focus and memory improvement. Thiamine relieves stress and muscle tension. Thiamine breaks down carbs and fats to release energy to every cell in the body to use. Thiamine is important in the health and function of nerves because it is needed to make the chemical messenger acetylcholine, which is vital for memory and muscle tonicity within organs. As an antioxidant, thiamine protects the body from aging, and the damage from alcohol, and cigarette smoke. For athletes, thiamine reduces fatigue, increases energy and mental function. Thiamin is found in whole-grain cereals, bread, red meat, egg yolks, green leafy vegetables, legumes, sweet corn, brown rice, berries, and yeast

Riboflavin/B2- Riboflavin assists in energy production through breaking down carbohydrates, fats and proteins. B2 is needed to activate B6 to regulate the Central nervous system and minimizes the damage to the nervous system that is caused by excess stress. Riboflavin is necessary for cell regeneration, growth and reproduction, the production of antibodies, the antioxidant glutathione and protects the moist tissues of the eyes, mouth, and nose. Vitamin B2 is found in whole-grain products, milk, meat, eggs, cheese and peas.

Niacin/B3- Regulates sleep and metabolizes tryptophan a precursor to serotonin the neurotransmitter that keeps the mind calm. Niacin is pertinent to energy production, vasodilation for blood circulation, red blood cell formation, health of skin, digestive tract, nervous system function, brain activity, synthesis of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Additionally B3 aids in the production of enzymes that produce energy, regulates blood glucose levels, and supports the body’s response to insulin. Vitamin B3 is a key for over 100 functions within the body. Niacin is found in meats, fish, brewer’s yeast, milk, eggs, legumes, potatoes and peanuts.

Pantothenic Acid/B5- Pantothenic acid is known as the “anti stress” vitamin. Pantothenic acid vital in the production of hormones and energy within the adrenal glands, therefore it can be helpful in stress relief. Pantothenic acid along with folic acid, and vitamin C are needed to regulate the adrenal gland functions, which create the stress hormones adrenalin and cortisols. Additionally, Vitamin B5 also removes toxins from the body, which can be caused by stress. Pantothenic Acid is found in calf’s liver, sunflower seeds, crimini mushrooms, yogurt, corn, broccoli, winter squash, cauliflower, egg and strawberries.

B6- Vitamin B6 helps to produce serotonin a neurotransmitter that keeps the mind calm. It is essential in neurotransmitter synthesis and amino acid metabolism. B6 is a coenzyme for many chemical reactions and converts tryptophan to serotonin. Vitamin B6 can supplement to increase mood, depression and memory function. B6 can be found in liver, meat, brown rice, fish, butter, wheat germ, whole grain cereals, and soybeans.

B12- Vitamin B12 is responsible for releasing endorphins, the “feel good” chemicals in the brain. Endorphins can enhance mood and state of mind. Vitamin B12 is involved in metabolism of every cell in the body, DNA synthesis, proper red blood cell formation, and energy production. Vitamin B12 can be found in shellfish, beef, eggs, and cheese but is also available in supplements and injections.

Vitamin C- Vitamin C is an antioxidant which can relieve mental stress and tension. Vitamin C is involved in the synthesis of stress hormone cortisol, which is produced during stressful times and released into the body. Therefore vitamin C is used up quickly during stress and needs to be replaced daily. Deficiency of vitamin C can reduce the functioning of the adrenal glands and cause symptoms of anxiety, irritability, and stress. Vitamin C boosts the immune system to stave off stressful problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Vitamin C can be found in Kiwifruit, Broccoli, Strawberry, Orange, Kale, Lemon, Cauliflower, Spinach, Lime, Tomato, Blueberry, Pineapple, Grape, Apricot, Plum, Watermelon, Banana, Carrot, Avocado, Cherry, Peach, Apple, Asparagus, Pear, Lettuce, Cucumber, Eggplant and many more.

Vitamin E-Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which controls the production of free radicals. As an antioxidant it works to relieve stress by fighting the bodies physical reaction to stress. Vitamin E works even better to combat stress when combined with another antioxidant selenium. Vitamin E can be found in almonds, mangoes, broccoli, fortified cereals, seeds, nuts, green leafy vegetables, pumpkin, sweet potato, blue crab, asparagus, olives and corn oil.

Vitamin K is a group of fat soluble vitamins that are needed for the posttranslational modification of certain proteins, mostly required for blood coagulation but also involved in metabolism pathways in bone and other tissue.

Why do we require Vitamin K?

Vitamin K plays an important role in regulating the clotting of blood. Our liver requires Vitamin K to produce proteins that promote blood clotting.

Healthy blood clotting is essential for our everyday health. The ability of our body to clot blood efficiently prevents excessive bleeding when we suffer a skin wound.

It is also essential that blood clotting is regulated efficiently. Too much clotting is as dangerous as too little blood clotting.

At one end of the spectrum, less than normal blood clotting can lead to excessive bleeding when we suffer an injury. At the other end of the spectrum, too much clotting can cause a blockage in the functioning blood vessel(s) in the body.

Vitamin K deficiency bleeding

Vitamin K deficiency bleeding is a rare disease that occurs in approximately 1 in 10,000 newborns. The disease can cause significant damage to the brain of the newborn, and in some cases, can also lead to death.

The good news is that Vitamin K deficiency bleeding is completely preventable. You can safeguard your baby from Vitamin K deficiency bleeding by giving extra Vitamin K to your child after birth.

Which newborns are at greater risk of developing Vitamin K deficiency bleeding?

Babies born to mothers who were on certain drugs such as anticonvulsants during pregnancy may be prone to Vitamin K deficiency bleeding. Additionally, premature babies and babies who have liver disease are more susceptible to this type of bleeding disorder.

Why extra Vitamin K is given to all newborns?

It makes more sense to give extra Vitamin K to only those neonates who are at an increased risk to Vitamin K bleeding. However, in reality, this is not a feasible option, as this bleeding disorder occurs without warning and can be fatal. That is why all infants are given extra Vitamin K after birth.

How extra Vitamin K is given to neonates?

Vitamin K is given either through injection or orally. One Vitamin K injection after birth is sufficient for preventing Vitamin K deficiency bleeding. If you choose to give your infant Vitamin K orally, ensure that your newborn gets three doses: Dose 1 at birth, Dose 2 after 3 to 5 days, and Dose 3 after 28 days.

The best way to give infants Vitamin K is through injection, as only one dose is required and the question of missing the dose does not arise. In case you decide to give Vitamin K orally to your newborn, it is essential that you keep the following things in mind:

* Premature babies should be given Vitamin K via an injection. The primary reason for this is that premature babies may require smaller doses of Vitamin K, and administering a small dose orally may prove to be difficult.

* In case the mother took medication for blood clotting, tuberculosis, or epilepsy during pregnancy, it is recommended that the baby be given Vitamin K through injection. The reason is that such babies may not be able to properly absorb Vitamin K orally.

* If your baby is unwell, when a Vitamin K dose is due, it is best you give your neonate a Vitamin K injection, as feeding Vitamin K orally may become difficult when the baby is unwell.

Is Vitamin K safe for newborns?

Yes, Vitamin K is 100% safe. This is why extra Vitamin K is given to neonates all around the world.

In the early 1990s, a few concerns about Vitamin K were raised when two medical papers suggested that there might be some link between Vitamin K injections and blood cancer (leukaemia) in children. However, all the studies done on Vitamin K before and after these papers were published, state unequivocally that there is no association between Vitamin K use and blood cancer in children.

Recently, two studies were published that studied 4000 cases and found no link between childhood cancer and Vitamin K usage.

In Denmark, all children born over a period of forty years from 1945 onward were studied, and no difference was noted in the leukaemia rate in infants who didn’t receive Vitamin K, infants who were given Vitamin K orally, and infants who were given Vitamin K through injection.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a single injection of Vitamin K for all newborns and states that the link between Vitamin K and blood cancer is unproven.

What if I don’t give my newborn Vitamin K?

You would be putting your child at a greater risk of developing Vitamin K deficiency bleeding if you don’t give him/her a Vitamin K shot or oral dose.

We don’t recommend that you make the choice of not giving your infant Vitamin K. However, if you do make this choice, then you should watch out for the symptoms of Vitamin K deficiency bleeding in your child.

Vitamin K deficiency in adults

Although very rare, Vitamin K deficiency in adults may occur if a person is on anticoagulant drugs, or has a severe liver damage or disease. Additionally, adults who suffer from disorders of fat mal-absorption may also be more susceptible to Vitamin K deficiency.

Research also points that people who are Vitamin K deficient may have a greater risk of bone fracture.

Depending on the underlying condition that is causing Vitamin K deficiency and level of the deficiency, your doctor may recommend you diet rich in Vitamin K, Vitamin K supplements, or drugs to improve the level of Vitamin K in your body.

The ability of our body to clot blood efficiently prevents excessive bleeding when we suffer a skin wound. Research also points that people who are Vitamin K deficient may have a greater risk of bone fracture. Benefits of Vitamin K However, in reality, this is not a feasible option, as this bleeding disorder occurs without warning and can be fatal.

Vitamins and minerals are substances your body needs in small but steady amounts for growth, functioning and health. Vitamins and minerals are called trace elements.

Vitamins are a group of essential nutrients that your body can not synthesize itself and must obtain them (in minute quantities) of food for maintaining good health.

Vitamins are essential for various biological processes, including growth, digestion, mental health and resistance to infection. They also help the body use carbohydrates, fats and proteins and act as catalysts – start or accelerate chemical reactions. Although vitamins are involved in converting food to energy, supply body calories. People need 13 different vitamins.

There are 2 types of vitamins:

• Water-soluble vitamins – (vitamin C, biotin and B vitamins) are dissolved in water and stored in the body in significant quantities. Are excreted in the urine.
• Fat-soluble vitamins – (vitamins A, D, E, K) which our body is not consumed immediately after ingestion, are stored in body fat and liver. Excess fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate in the body and become toxic.
• Name vitamin invented Polish biochemist Funk in 1912. Vita means life in Latin and the suffix-amine is short for amine; at that time it was presumed that the vitamins are amines. Although today we know that this is not true, the name changed.
• Vitamins were first identified due to diseases caused by lack of vitamins.

Diet

• All foods are the best source of vitamins and minerals because they are complex, contain fiber and other substances, which are obviously important for good health.
• Disease from lack of vitamins
• There are several diseases that are caused by insufficient supply of vitamins. You can get stronger and even endanger human life.

Some of these diseases are:

• Vitamin A deficiency – night blindness
• Vitamin B1 – beriberi
• B2
• B12 – malignant anemia (loss of red blood cells)
• B3 – pellagra
• C – scurvy
• D – rickets (calcium deficiency)

Names of vitamins

Some of the names are already outdated vitamins: vitamin B – in fact a complex of several vitamins (B-number, H and M), vitamin G – another name for riboflavin (vitamin B2).

Use names in the format “vitamin letter” and “vitamin letter number” is diminishing. This is especially true for vitamins H, M, B1, B2, B3 and B5, which are usually called their proper chemical names.

Conversely vitamins D and E are still called by their symbolic names, and vitamins A and C do not even have proper chemical names (since they are mixtures of chemicals).

Names of ascorbic acid and vitamin C are used equally often.

“Letter” vitamin is sometimes several names. For example:

• Vitamin A – retinol, retinaldehyde, retinol acid
• Vitamin B1 – thiamine
• Vitamin B2 – Riboflavin
• Vitamin B6 – pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine
• Vitamin B12 – cobalamin
• Vitamin C – Ascorbic Acid
• Vitamin D – calciferol
• Vitamin E – tocopherol, tocotrienol
• Vitamin K, phylloquinone.

rel = “nofollow” onclick = “javascript: _gaq.push (['_trackPageview', '/ outgoing / article_exit_link']);” href =”http://infertilityhospital.blogspot.com/”>http://infertilityhospital.blogspot.com/

People are able to synthesize certain vitamins to some extent. For example, vitamin D is produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight, niacin can be synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan, and vitamin K and biotin be synthesized by bacteria living in the gut.

If a vitamin is in short supply or not in a position to be used correctly, a certain deficiency syndrome results. If the lack of vitamin is replenished before any irreversible damage to the signs and symptoms are reversed. The amounts of vitamins in foods and the amounts needed on a daily basis, measured in milligrams and micrograms.
In contrast to the macronutrients, vitamins, this does not serve as an energy source for the body or raw materials for tissue building. Rather, they claim, in support of energy production reactions and to facilitate metabolic and physiological processes throughout the body. Vitamin A, for example, for embryonic development, growth, reproduction, proper immune system function and integrity of the epithelial cells, required in addition to its role in vision.
The B vitamins function as coenzymes that support for energy metabolism; folic acid (folate) , one of the B vitamins, helps prevent birth defects in the early stages of pregnancy . Vitamin C plays a role in the development of connective tissue as well as an antioxidant a , which helps to protect against damage from reactive molecules (free radicals). is now regarded as hormone, vitamin D in calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and bone metabolism involved.
Vitamin E , another antioxidant, protects against free radical damage in lipid systems and Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting. Although vitamins are often discussed separately, many of their functions are interrelated and a deficiency of one may affect the function of the other.
Vitamin Nomenclature is a bit complex, with chemical names gradually replaced the original letter designations in the era of vitamin discovery created during the first half of the 20th Century. Nomenclature is the realization that vitamins with parts of families, are complicated in some cases more active forms. Some vitamins are in foods purchased in pre-press, which are activated in the body before they can properly fulfill its function must be found. For example, Beta (?)-carotene , found in plants, vitamin A is converted in the body.
The 13 vitamins known to be required of the people are classified into two groups according to their solubility. The four fat-soluble vitamins (soluble in nonpolar solvents ) are vitamins A, D, E and K. Although now known to behave like a hormone, which activated form of vitamin D, vitamin D-hormone (calcitriol) is still with the vitamins. grouped

The nine water-soluble vitamins (soluble in polar solvents) are vitamin C and the eight B vitamins: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B 6 , folic acid, vitamin B 12 , pantothenic acid , and biotin. choline is a vitamin-like dietary component that is clearly required for normal metabolism, but that can be synthesized by the body. Although choline may, in the diet of premature infants may be necessary and people with certain medical conditions, it has not been so important in human nutrition established throughout life.
Different vitamins are more or less vulnerable to destruction by environmental factors and chemicals. For example, thiamine is particularly vulnerable to prolonged heating, riboflavin with ultraviolet or fluorescent light, and vitamin C against oxidation (as when a piece of fruit is cut open and exposed to the vitamin of the air). In general, water-soluble vitamins are easily destroyed in cooking as a fat-soluble vitamins.
The solubility of a vitamin influences as it is absorbed, transported, stored, and excreted by the body and, where found in food. With the exception of vitamin B12, which is supplied only from foods of animal origin, the water-soluble vitamins are synthesized by plants and present in both plant and animal foods.
Strict vegetarians (vegans) who eat no foods of animal origin, and therefore run the risk of vitamin B 12 deficiency. Fat-vitamins, on the other hand, are provided in conjunction with fats and oils in foods and in the body and usually require protein carriers for transport through the water-filled chambers of the body.
Water-soluble vitamins are not appreciably stored in the body (except vitamin B12) and must therefore be included regularly in the diet. If they are in excess easily excreted in the urine, although potential toxicity even with water-soluble vitamins;. Particularly noteworthy in this context Vitamin B 6

Since fat-soluble vitamins in the liver and adipose tissue are stored, they are not necessarily taken in a day as long as average intakes in the Over time, weeks, months or even years to meet the needs of the body. However, increased by the fact that these vitamins can be stored, the possibility of toxicity if taken in very high doses. This is of particular concern with vitamins A and D, which can be toxic when in excess.
In certain circumstances, pharmacological (“megadose”) levels of some vitamins is many times higher than the amount typically accepted in foods have medicinal applications. Niacin , is used for example to lower blood cholesterol levels, vitamin D is used to treat psoriasis and pharmacological derivatives of vitamin A used for acne and other skin diseases and to treat reduce wrinkles . However, the consumption of vitamins or other dietary supplements in amounts significantly above the recommended values, not recommended without medical supervision.
vitamins are synthesized in the laboratory the same molecules as those extracted from food, and they can not be distinguished from the body. However, various forms of a vitamin is not necessarily equivalent. In the particular case of vitamin E, d-?-tocopherol supplements labeled (or “natural”) generally contain more vitamin E activity known as the dl-?-tocopherol. vitamins in the food supplement have a distinct advantage in the form of vitamins, since they are associated with other substances that may be useful, and there is less potential toxicity. Dietary supplements can not substitute for a healthy diet.
Click here to discover how the treatment of infertility, of course, without drugs or surgery . Pregnancy MiracleTM System .
